You Can’t Do That!

Everyone had gone to the fair from Bollinger’s farm, and Alvin had particularly liked the man who was walking around on stilts. “Will you get me a pair of stilts, Papa?” he asked Father Bollinger, “To walk like the man in the fair!” “You can’t do that!” said Mr Bollinger, firmly, “Get on with your homework!” But Alvin found tall sticks used for holding up the creepers of peas. He pulled out two of them, and the creepers crumpled to the ground. Then he found some twine and tied them in two places on each stick–one to stand on and the other to hold. He tried to stand with the help of the two sticks and fell quite a few times. Suddenly his mother screamed, “Oh my goodness! The peas!” When Farmer Bollinger saw Alvin’s stilts, he realised what happened to the peas! Alvin got a whack and decided to do his homework!
