37 mm of wingspan, the zimmerman pine moth is grey with brownish reddish zig-zag markings. The larvae, which are dirty pink or green colour, live in crevices under a main branch or sheltered sites under the bark scales. They feed on pine trees, specifically Austrian and Scotch pine. They create a silken chamber; from where they mine into the main stem and inner terminal shoots of the pine trees.
