A BLOCK OF STRENGTH (Amazing Science Games and Experiments)

Materials Required:

  1. 2 broomsticks
  2. Rope

Procedure:

  1. Ask 2 adults to stand several feet apart and give each of them a broomstick. Tie one end of a rope to one of the broomsticks.
  2. Weave the rope back and forth between the broom sticks several times.
  3. Tell the adults to try in order to pull the broomsticks apart. On the other hand, you easily move the 2 broomsticks together by pulling on the free end of the rope.

This is what happens:

This set-up is called block and tackle. The force of your strength is increased each time the rope is looped around the broomsticks, and so you appear to be stronger than 2 adults! Block and tackle is used for lifting heavy items like machinery and pianos.
