Beeper’s Delight

Beeper was a little car that belonged to Mr Gordon. He had been there for years and taken his boys, Andrew and Edward, to school and sports and holidays. Now he was old. The boys spoke about a new car.
Now Andy said he wanted a car with a roof that could fold down. Edie wanted a van with a trailer. This made Beeper very sad. “What will happen to me once the boys have new cars?” he wondered as he stood in his garage, “Mr Gordon will get old like me.”
One day, a man came to meet Mr Gordon. They came into the garage where Beeper was standing. The man wore a suit and a red hat. He had a loud voice and laughed a lot. He opened the bonnet of beeper and looked inside. Then he sat inside and started the car, changed the gears, and drove with Mr Gordon around the block and back.
“I’ll take it, Mr Gordon. It’s just right for my purpose,” roared the man, laughing. Mr Gordon took him into the house. Beeper was terrified. This man was going to take Beeper?

In a while, the man came back, shook Mr Gordon’s hand and got into Beeper. There was just time to see Mr Gordon looking a little sad and for him to pat Beeper’s bonnet lovingly, before the man started the little car and drove off.
For some time Beeper could barely see through his tears. Then as he stopped crying, he saw they were near the sea. He could see the beach stretching away a beautiful place.
The man got out and a young boy with sandy hair and a wide smile came running up, saying, “Hullo, Mr Foster! Is this our new car?”
Beeper looked around. “New? Who, me?” he wondered. “Come along, Sandy,” said Mr Foster, “You will take care of this little fellow! You know what we are required to do, don’t you?”
Sandy took the keys. Beeper thought the boy seemed nice. He took Beeper to a shed, cleaned and polished him till he shone, whistling all the time. Then he put a placard up: ‘50 cents a ride’ it said.

The next morning, a small boy came with his father and paid some money to Sandy. Sandy drove them down the beach and back. The little boy bounced happily on the seat and squealed with delight!
Sandy drove carefully and the children who rode Beeper were so delighted that some of their happiness rubbed off on Beeper too! It was a wonderful life indeed!
