In the Woods

Tina was staying at her grandparents’ place for summer. It was a beautiful town. Her cousins Harry, Darryl and Henry also accompanied her. One fine evening, the four cousins set out to explore the woods. Soon, they came to a little clearing, where they saw an old barn. Thrilled, the children started exploring the woods around the barn. Soon, the boys realised that their cousin Tina was not with them anymore. When they looked around, they saw her walking towards a glade beyond the barn. “Tina, where are you going?” called out Harry. The boys started following her, when suddenly she started screaming for help. “Henry, I am sinking. Help me,” she cried. The boys ran towards her and stared in amazement. Down and down she went. The mud was giving way beneath her weight. It was as if she was standing on quicksand.

Tina is Saved

All the boys rushed to her help. With all their might, they tried to pull her up but to no avail. Tina felt very heavy indeed and it was almost impossible to bear her weight. Feeling helpless, the boys started praying to God. All of them closed their eyes and prayed that nothing should happen to their cousin Tina. Suddenly, Tina stopped crying. When the boys opened their eyes, they saw that Tina was standing on firm ground like them. There was a great sense of relief on her face. However, she was too shocked after her ordeal to tell them what had happened to her. The boys knew it was better not to ask her anything for the time being. So, after getting out of the woods, the boys immediately took her to a doctor. At the hospital, Tina was given an injection and was soon sleeping peacefully.

What Tina Saw

The next day when Tina recovered from the shock, she soon called out to her cousins. “I want to tell you what happened there at the barn,” said Tina. Her cousins told her there was no hurry and she should talk about it only if she was comfortable talking about it. “I think it’s important that I tell you what happened,” she said, “so that no one may make the mistake I made.” Soon Henry, Darryl and Harry sat around her, as she explained to them how she had got into the mess. “When we were exploring the woods around the barn, I suddenly saw a girl in school uniform standing in the glade,” said Tina, “I heard her whisper my name and was curious about how she knew me. That girl had some charm, because of which I just kept walking towards her without telling you.” Tears were welling up in her eyes at the memory.

The Roaming Spirit

“As soon as I reached the place where the girl was standing, she just vanished into thin air. Then I felt as if the ground was giving way and I started going down. That’s when I screamed out to you boys,” said Tina. The boys could not believe what Tina had said. So, they went and told their grandparents about what Tina had told them. Listening to the boys, the grandfather said, “What Tina says could be true!” The boys were astonished. “How do you know?” asked Darryl. “Mary years ago, there used to be an old well in the same place where a glade stands now. A naughty girl called Mary loitered around the old barn and the well, after school. All the elders had warned her against going there. One day, she fell into the well and died. People filled up the well. It doesn’t exit. But some say, Mary’s spirit still roams there. Maybe she pulled Tina into the well!”
