The Beauty of Man-made Creations

One day, Akbar felt very tired and felt like taking some time off to relax from his hectic schedule. He wanted to go for a walk in the garden and he also called Birbal to come along. He said, “Birbal, I want to have some relaxing time. Why don’t you come along with me for a walk in the garden?”

It was a very pleasant day. The weather was fine and the cool breeze added to the delight. Akbar’s garden had many beautiful flowers, which were a delight for everyone᾿s eyes. When Akbar and Birbal were taking a stroll in the garden, Akbar stopped near a beautiful lily flower. It was big because it was in full bloom. Akbar said, “Birbal, look at this beautiful flower. It is a creation of Mother Nature. Isn’t it the best of all creations? In fact, anything made by Mother Nature is the best. What do you think?”

Birbal replied, “Your Majesty, it is not necessary that only Mother Nature’s creations are the best. There are man-made creations too which deserve the same kind of appreciation.”

“Okay; I throw you a challenge to show me one man-made creation, which I can appreciate the same way as I did for the lily flower.” Birbal took the challenge and asked for a day’s time.

The next day, Birbal brought a sculptor along in Akbar’s court. The sculptor was very happy to meet the Emperor. He had brought personally a sculpted bouquet with him to present it to Akbar. The bouquet was made of marbles. The bouquet had carved roses, lilies and tulips in it.

Akbar was surprised to see how something made by man could be so beautiful. He was very happy to see such a beautiful bouquet and also praised the sculptor. Also, Akbar rewarded the sculptor with gold coins.

The same evening, when the gardener’s son saw Akbar walking with Birbal, he came to the Emperor and gifted him a beautiful red rose from the garden. Akbar happily took the rose and gave the boy five silver coins.

Birbal was standing at one corner and observed the event. He said, “Your Majesty, don’t you think that both man-made and Mother Nature’s creations are equally beautiful? I could see that you were appreciating both. However, in this case, I believe that the rose in the sculptor’s bouquet was much more beautiful than the real rose from the garden.”

Akbar completely agreed to what Birbal had said and praised him for being so intellectual with clear thinking.
