‘Skyscraper’ is a term used for describing very tall building. The Bible mentions a tall building, ‘the Tower of Babel’. People of northern Europe started building huge cathedrals of great height, in the Middle Ages, which remained the tallest buildings for many years. Great architects designed tall buildings to which tall spires were added to give extra height. As the population grew in the nineteenth century, land became scarce and taller buildings had to be built. To bear the weight, iron and steel were used for construction. The first skyscraper in the US was designed in 1883; it was the Home Insurance Building of Chicago. The world*s current tallest building is the Burj Khalifa.
