By putting salt on the icy roads, the freezing point of water is being altered. Water with higher salinity has a lower freezing point than water that does not have salt. By salting the roads, the freezing point of water that forms ice is lowered, which further results in melting and preventing water, rain or snow from being able to freeze again. The salt makes it harder for the water molecules to accumulate together in a rigid structure again.
Why do people put salt on icy roads?
